You may be under the impression that toddlers learn from the grown-ups in their lives, but there are lessons in joy to be found in how our favorite little people live their lives. I had the pleasure of spending some time recently with a 17 month old and here are three undeniable things I’ve learnt:
- Snacking on fruits and veggies is always a good ideas: apples, bananas, cucumbers and strawberries are delicious! Toddlers and grown-ups alike benefit from not waiting till they’re starving to eat – don’t let hanger rule your life! But also, stop eating when you’re not hungry anymore and everyone stays content.
- Hi-ya! or toddler speak for high five – which is what she’ll repeatedly do to everyone who is receptive to it around her. Life is good! Fill your life with positive people who are on your team, who will stand by you, and will share your wins and disappointments in life. And be there to give you a hug when you fall!
- Be wildly selective about who you choose to get close to – and be wary of strangers. Babies have a finely tuned sense of people they know and have spent time with (mom, dad, other family) vs “I don’t know you, why are you trying to hold me?” Intuition exists for a reason – listen to it.
Bonus – if you can figure out how to have someone carry everything you need for the day, and to carry you when you’re tired, congratulations! and please tell me how you did it!
